We regularly assist customers who are having issues when installing wire-in type turbo timers. These issues are often related to one of the following topics.

Ensure that the correct timer model is selected.

  • Each model of turbo timer is designed to suit vehicles with specific characteristics. Use of the incorrect timer model for a vehicle may result in damage to both the timer and the vehicle. These are not included in the timer warranty.
  • There is a comprehensive range of plug-in timers to suit most popular late model passenger vehicles. Where available, these should be used in preference to wire-in timers.
  • Our Turbo Timer Selection tool includes a wide range of vehicles and vehicle types, including passenger vehicles, 4WD vehicles, light commercial vehicles, trucks, earthmoving machinery, tractors and forklifts.

Check the maximum potential load on the timer before installation.

  • The maximum current drain on any one timer output cannot exceed 10 amps.
  • Checking the maximum load includes turning on all ancillary functions such as air conditioning, fans, lights, etc. If any doubt exists about the potential load on the timer, introduce a relay to carry the current.

Ensure there are no faults in the vehicle ignition wiring before installation.

  • Faults in either the ignition system or wiring of the vehicle into which the timer is installed can cause a voltage spike which may damage the timer, preventing it from operating.
  • Damage from these types of vehicle faults are not included in the timer warranty.

Ensure the installation instructions are followed in full.

  • Each timer has installation instructions included with it. These need to be followed in full to ensure that the timer will operate. These instructions are also available on the Installation page.
  • In particular, ensure that the black wire is properly connected to earth and that the green (parking brake interface) wire has been connected or earthed. The timer will not operate if either of these are ignored.

When testing after installation, ensure that the engine runs for at least 30 seconds.

  • The turbo timer will not operate unless the engine has been operating for a minimum of 30 seconds. This is a deliberate feature, to ensure that the timer does not operate where the engine is accidentally or inadvertently started.

Ensure that when installed, the timer is in a weatherproof location.

  • Timer parts are reasonably dust and moisture resistant. However they are not designed for installation in locations exposed to the weather, such as open cabin vehicles.
  • Installation in these types of locations will result in the failure of the timer due either to moisture damage or corrosion of the timer components.
  • For open cabin vehicles it may be necessary to mount the timer control module in a weatherproof enclosure.

Do not substitute parts from other timers.

  • The main module and control module for each series of timers (724 series, 725 series & 925 series) operate only with other parts from that series. They will not work with parts from any other series.

Do not attempt to repair the timer.

  • All timers are provided with a 24 month unlimited kilometre warranty. This is voided if the timer modules are opened or repairs to them are attempted.
